Comedy Review

Daniel Kitson
Stand Comedy Club

Daniel Kitson looks like the nerdy professor from a 1974 Open University programme about particle waves, and some of his material is equally baffling. Much of his set is thoughtful and intelligent but he also mixes in the puerile which spoils the overall presentation.
It all seemed to be going a bit pear shaped for Daniel Kitson, he is funny but he seems to have trouble coping with his fame. Last year's story telling in the Pod was a bit unusual and although this show is a return to the slightly more conventional stand-up, the presentation has all gone awry. Several times he had to prompt himself from a notebook, but this was early in the run and that will probably improve. His thoughts about his childhood remain sharp and funny if occasionally bitter sweet and although there initially appeared to be a theme his journey rapidly descended into nearby cul-de-sacs. There are periods of brilliance which hint at his 2002 Perrier winning performance but I was left with the feeling that he just wasn't trying very hard. At least he's not in a tent anymore.

Have a break, have a Kitson.
