Comedy Review

Janey Godley & Ashley Storrie
Underbelly

Mother (Janey Godley) and daughter (Ashley Storrie) team up to shout obscenities at each other. Yes, that is basically it. They do this in the guise of a few 'character creations' who seem to have confused 'Smack the Pony' with 'one trick pony' as each character delivers the same foul-mouthed catch-phrase in one-dimensional guises so thin they were almost blown over in the not unwelcome light breeze. Their enthusiasm has to be admired in the delivery of this shabby material that many other performers would be too embarrassed to perform once, never mind a full Fringe run.

I'm no prude, and will stick a gratuitous f*ck, tit and willy into a review at the drop of a hat, but i don't expect you to pay to read it or laugh at it. The use of swearing in comedy is as old as the language but when your whole show consists of poor taste gags interspersed with unfunny out of context profanity it's just not comedy, it's boring and lazy. If you want uncontrolled swearing, just hang about Grassmarket on a Friday evening, it'll be free and probably more entertaining. I was surprised to see a couple of audience members who thought this was initially highly amusing, but once the same inane characters had reappeared and delivered more crude ramblings the only noise from the punters were footsteps.

Shut up and go away.
