Comedy Review

God's Pottery
Pleasance Beside
Christian musical duo Gideon Lamb and Jeremiah Smallchild have organised this show to raise money for a sick Harlem boy called LeVert. At least that's the premise of this faux christian fund raiser which is really a character comedy show spoofing the world of hip-christians and a little too close to Ned Flanders to be called truly original. The songs which promote clean living and chastity are occasionally a little too close to christian reality to be true parody although there are some great lines. Songs like 'The pants come off when the ring goes on' and 'Jesus I'm drunk' are the comic highlights in this well structured and brilliantly performed show where the fake smiles hardly crack for a second as the duo extol the virtues of christianity and have a few mild pops at other religions.
The spoken pieces between the songs are not as strong and after a while i began to wish the characters would evolve, but I suppose the parody is that nothing fazes or changes these people from their irrational belief. I did enjoy the show but it did prove to be a bit of a one-trick-pony and at points the satire was lost as the attitude and mind set too closely mirrored the real world, when I was hoping that one of them would have a sudden epiphany and we might see some fireworks in this gentle show. Alas no.
Let us play.
